The “soap” product commonly found in your grocery store’s beauty aisle is like cheap, 99-cent white bread made from bleached, processed flour. Sure, it’s “enriched” with vitamins and can be used to make a sandwich or two, but you have to wonder about the long-term effects of a steady diet of something so bland and highly processed. Commercial “soaps” are no different: they’re mass-produced chemically manufactured surfactants and detergents, with an occasional moisturizer added in. In fact, the next time you are at the store, check the packaging. Most of these products do not actually use the word “soap” on their labels. Instead, they’re called “body bars” or “beauty bars.” This is because, by FDA regulations, they aren’t legally soap at all.
